Why it exists.
The beginning
Sillage Galant arrived in 2017, a year that placed Manos Gerakinis in conversation with collectors paying close attention to his catalogue. By then the house had developed a body of work rooted in the Aegean coast, translating personal geography into wearable compositions. Sillage Galant moved into denser, more opulent territory, a composition centered on oud and saffron with a smoky intensity. The name itself signals intent. "Sillage" is the trail a scent leaves behind, and "galant" carries the old French weight of gallantry, of courtly presence. Together, they promise a fragrance built for how it moves through a room, not just how it sits on skin. The result is a composition that opens with a controlled brightness before pulling you into something warmer and more resinous.
What makes Sillage Galant distinctive is the way rice and geranium slip into the heart, an unusual pairing that gives the composition a dry, almost metallic floral lift between the saffron opening and the leather drydown. The rice note reads as powdery and starchy rather than sweet, and the geranium sharpens it with that green, slightly bitter edge the material is known for. Together they prevent the heart from collapsing into the kind of dense, syrupy center that weighs down many compositions built around oud and rose.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a controlled burn. Saffron and bergamot spar at the top, bright citrus against that leathery oud, and the whole composition smells like a spice market just before closing time. As the heart opens, jasmine and geranium arrive, but they're not the sweet, obvious florals. They're drier, almost austere, and the rice note adds a powdery, starchy softness that keeps them from turning soapy. Cardamom threads through everything, warm and slightly smoky. By hour three, the base has settled in properly. Leather and sandalwood take over, the oud deepens from bright to resinous, and the patchouli grounds it without making things earthy or heavy. The musk underneath stays close to skin, intimate rather than projecting.
Cultural impact
Sillage Galant reflects an approach to oud that pulls the material away from its most familiar contexts. Gerakinis's composition, saffron and bergamot up top, rice and geranium in the heart, leather and sandalwood in the base, treats oud as one element within a larger architecture rather than the gravitational center of the fragrance. The result is something that reads as composed and European in sensibility without losing the warmth and resinous depth the material brings. It's a discontinued release now, which adds a certain weight to bottles that remain in circulation.
