The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rose Poetique arrived in 2018 as a deliberate act of reinvention. Manos Gerakinis had already made a rose fragrance regarded among the top five in the world, so when he decided to return to the Damask rose, the question wasn't whether to try again but how to surprise. The answer was joy. Not the quiet, powdery joy of a gentle floral. Something louder. The brand describes it as jubilation, a word that doesn't appear in perfume copy often because it risks sounding hyperbolic. Here, it fits.
What makes Rose Poetique structurally unusual is the labdanum. It's not a standard rose companion, the resinous, ambery quality typically lives in orientals and chypres, not in fruity-florals. Here it anchors the Damask rose to something deeper, preventing the composition from sliding into simplicity. The raspberry and rhubarb at the opening are tart enough to feel sharp, but the saffron threads warmth through that acidity from the first moment. Cashmere wood, rather than oud or cedar, provides the base, softer, with a slight creaminess that lets the vanilla and musk settle without weight.
The evolution
The opening hits with immediate intention. Raspberry and rhubarb arrive together, bright, slightly sour, unmistakably alive. Saffron joins within seconds, not to sweeten but to warm the edges. This phase lasts perhaps twenty minutes before the Damask rose begins to assert itself, moving from background to center stage. The rose doesn't replace the fruit, it layers over it, creating a sweetness that feels earned rather than imposed. Labdanum adds body here, a resinous thickness that gives the heart real substance. By hour three, the rose is still present but the base is taking over. Cashmere wood and sandalwood create a creamy woody foundation. Musk softens everything further. Vanilla lingers in the background, never quite disappearing. On fabric, this fragrance holds for eight to ten hours. On skin, expect eight hours of moderate sillage, present without overwhelming. The next morning, faint traces of cashmere wood and musk remain on unwashed skin, a quiet reminder.
Cultural impact
Among rose fragrances, Rose Poetique occupies a specific space, not the classical or romantic rose, but the joyful one. The Sappho reference in the brand copy isn't decoration; it positions this within Greek literary heritage, connecting the ancient poet's praise of the Damask rose to a modern composition. For wearers seeking a rose that feels optimistic rather than nostalgic, this fills a gap between gentle florals and darker oud-rose constructions.
