The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bestia Sacra arrived in 2025 as part of Maksim Bortnikoff's third collection, a two-fragrance release that also included L'Oud Marin. The name translates from Latin as 'sacred beast,' and the fragrance earns it. From the first moments on skin, this is a composition that announces itself without apology. The opening offers Somalian frankincense, bright and resinous, with bergamot lending a brief citrus lift before the smoke begins to build. As the fragrance develops, animalic notes emerge, bringing warmth and depth that feel ancient and immediate. Mysrrh and opoponax deepen the composition, while labdanum and benzoin add layers of resinous warmth that linger long after the initial confrontation fades. The drydown reveals cypriol and oakmoss, grounding the structure with earthy complexity.
The material architecture pulls no punches. Two frankincense sources anchor the opening, Somalian and Indian, giving the start a duality that reads as both temple and wilderness. Bergamot cuts through just enough to prevent the first moments from becoming overwhelming. Then the heart arrives: a layered animalic construction of civet, castoreum, and musk that is dense, almost confrontational in its honesty. Cypriol and myrrh deepen the darkness. Opoponax adds a balsamic sweetness that tempers without softening. The base settles into labdanum, benzoin, and oakmoss, a resinous-mossy foundation that grounds everything that came before.
The evolution
The opening is a declaration. Somalian frankincense hits bright and resinous, bergamot adding a brief citrus lift before the smoke takes over. Ten minutes in, the animalic heart begins to assert itself. Civet and castoreum arrive together, not politely but directly. This is where some wearers reconsider. The warmth is immediate, skin-close, and entirely unapologetic. Mysrrh and opoponax deepen the darkness. By the second hour, the composition has shifted from confrontation to something more intimate. The animalic notes settle into the skin rather than announcing themselves. Labdanum and benzoin add warmth that feels almost sweet in contrast. Oakmoss emerges in the base, bringing a mossy-earthy quality that grounds the entire structure. Cypriol persists in the drydown, ensuring the smoke never fully disappears.
Cultural impact
Bestia Sacra occupies a specific corner of niche perfumery: the intersection of sacred and animalic. This fragrance ventures into challenging territory, offering an experience that rewards attention and patience rather than immediately pleasing. The moderate sillage and lasting presence suggest a composition designed for close wear, for those who appreciate complexity that unfolds gradually rather than announcing itself all at once. What makes this scent notable is its refusal to soften the more challenging aspects of its makeup, allowing frankincense, animalic notes, and smoky depths to remain present and unapologetic throughout the wear.
