The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Musk Couture came from a question Maksim Bortnikoff kept asking himself. The answer was this fragrance, a first collection piece that avoids the usual compromises. It opens with lychee and raspberry, bright and almost confectionery, then lets herbal and green notes pull everything back toward earth. The tobacco arrives next, not as a punch but as a slow exhale, its warmth threading through the composition without overwhelming the brighter top notes. The oud waits underneath, patient and dark, creating a foundation that grounds the entire structure. The whole composition is built around the idea that a fragrance can be bold without being loud, intimate without being shy.
What makes this composition interesting is the hand-off between phases. The lychee and raspberry open bright, almost candy-like, but they're not allowed to run away with things. Herbal and green notes keep them honest, a faint medicinal edge from the chamomile, something stemmy and alive underneath. Then the tobacco takes over the heart, warm and smoky, and suddenly the sweetness becomes something else entirely. The ylang-ylang amplifies the floral warmth without turning it soft. Cypriol and guaiac wood push deeper into earth. By the time the oud arrives in the drydown, you've already been prepared for something darker.
The evolution
The opening hits like a party you weren't sure you were invited to. Lychee and raspberry, bright and almost effervescent, with chamomile and green notes keeping things from tipping into pure sweetness. Within 30 minutes, the tobacco enters the conversation, warm, smoky, unexpectedly comfortable. The ylang-ylang amplifies the floral heart without making it soft. Cypriol and guaiac wood push deeper, earthier. Then the drydown: oud and musk intertwined, the sweetness of vanilla and benzoin wrapped around something animalic and warm. Oakmoss and cedarwood settle everything into a powdery, vintage-tinged close that stays intimate and close to the skin. The oud doesn't dominate, it anchors. That's the whole trick.
Cultural impact
Musk Couture arrived in 2024 as Maksim Perfume's debut release. The fragrance draws from a lineage of oud-forward compositions while incorporating lychee and herbaceous notes that distinguish it from more traditional combinations. Its tobacco heart reflects a departure from the rose-oud combinations that have dominated niche releases in preceding years, and the Roman chamomile inclusion adds an aromatic dimension that sets it apart. Since its launch, the fragrance has resonated with those seeking complexity and depth in their fragrance choices.
