The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
4 Pillars began not as a scent but as a foundation. Mathew Schmuelian, the perfumer behind Lost Tribe's releases, spent months with four raw materials: Indonesian sandalwood, Mongolian deer musk, Sultan Qaboos vintage musk, black ambergris, and wild Sri Lankan oud. These were the structural ingredients he intended to use across his entire catalog. The blend has been macerating since October 2022, with daily shaking to help the sandalwood absorb the true character of the other materials. By the time 4 Pillars launched in 2023, the composition had spent over half a year settling into itself, a slow, deliberate process uncommon in spray-format perfumery.
The composition is notable for its restraint. The sandalwood from Indonesia provides the creamy, lactonic backbone. The deer musk from Mongolia and the Sultan Qaboos vintage musk contribute the warm, skin-like animalic quality. Black ambergris adds the marine, mineral edge. The Sri Lankan oud brings resinous depth. Each material speaks at full volume, unimpeded by smoothing agents or bridging accords designed to tame them. They carry their own weight in the formula, and that independence is precisely what gives the fragrance its architecture.
The evolution
The opening hits hard and immediate, mostly ambergris and oud working together. There's a dark, almost burnt quality to the first few minutes, like resin heated over an open flame, with a saltiness underneath that reads as oceanic rather than culinary. The ambergris dominates this stage with a mineral assertiveness that some wearers find polarizing in the best possible way. Within 20 minutes, the sandalwood begins asserting itself, wrapping the sharper elements in a creamier, more legible texture. The deer musk rises alongside it, adding warmth that sits close to the skin rather than projecting outward. The transition from the aggressive top accord to the smoother middle phase is one of the more compelling aspects of the wear. By the one-hour mark, the composition has found its groove: oud and ambergris in the foreground, sandalwood as the binding agent, musk as the lasting undertone.
Cultural impact
4 Pillars stands out within the animalic-oud category for its commitment to material transparency. The fragrance uses just five naturals, macerated over months to allow the components to settle into a cohesive whole. Each ingredient is present at a concentration and character level that makes it legible to the wearer; nothing is diluted into obscurity or smoothed into anonymity. This makes the composition a touchstone for collectors who value the integrity of individual naturals and who want to experience materials like vintage musk and black ambergris without the distraction of added complexity.
