The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dominique Moellhausen designed Tasman as an olfactory tribute to Tasmania, that remote island at the edge of the world, all coastline and solitude. The name carries it: a place most people dream about but few will visit. Bergamot and grapefruit open bright and tart. Black pepper adds texture. Tomato leaf grounds the freshness, a green bite that anchors the composition. Then sage and white flowers arrive, quieter, as if the path has led somewhere unexpected. The base holds vetiver, patchouli, and warm woods, that earthy mineral finish that makes coastal walks smell like the edge of the world. Released in 2022 by Lazure, a house that builds its identity around maritime imagery and oceanic atmosphere.
The tomato leaf note in Tasman is placed front and center, arriving right after the citrus and pepper opening. It keeps the brightness from feeling sterile, and it gives the sage and white flowers somewhere warm to land. Sage brings its own herbal character, slightly camphoraceous, while the white flowers arrive quietly. The combination creates an aromatic heart that feels both cultivated and natural, the green notes blending with the herbal warmth to create something cohesive and inviting.
The evolution
The opening is the boldest phase. Black pepper, grapefruit, bergamot, and tomato leaf arrive together, bright, tart, with a green bite that snags attention. The citrus eventually fades and the tomato leaf asserts itself, almost vegetable-like, grounding everything. Then sage enters and the fragrance softens. The white flowers arrive quietly, floating above the green and pepper rather than competing. The herbal heart gradually mellows into something warmer. Vetiver takes the lead, mineral and woody, followed by patchouli's earth and musk's quiet animal warmth. The drydown is intimate, staying close, projecting modestly. The fragrance lingers on fabric, faint but present into the next day, like the smell of a coastline after the wind dies down.
Cultural impact
Tasman offers something different in the coastal fragrance category. It captures herbs, green vegetation, warm earth, and dry woods, rather than water itself. The tomato leaf note is prominent, lending a distinctive character that sparks conversation among those who encounter it. The fragrance doesn't try to please everyone, instead offering an unconventional composition that stands apart from typical coastal freshness. Enthusiasts who appreciate distinctive character over broad appeal have found something worth celebrating here.
