The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Secret Garden by Laverne arrived in 2025, composed by Hamid Merati-Kashani. A morning garden is the stated inspiration: pear dew on the skin, the first breath of warm florals, the green-edged air before the day starts moving. The composition opens with that crisp pear note lifted by a dusting of pink pepper, an almost edible fruit-spice combination that catches the light without becoming sharp. As the top notes settle, the heart reveals a generous pour of Damask rose, deep and slightly honeyed, the way real roses smell at the moment their petals first soften in warmth. Supporting the rose, geranium weaves through with its green, almost minty facet, sharpening the bouquet, while a thread of jasmine adds a creamy, indolic warmth that keeps the florals from feeling too clean or too cool.
The interesting move here is balance. Pink pepper and pear give the opening a crisp, almost edible fruit-spice lift, but neither runs away with the composition. The pear reads fresh and dewy rather than candy-sweet, and the pink pepper adds a gentle warmth that previews what's coming in the base. Damask rose anchors the heart, and rather than letting it solo, Merati-Kashani cushions it with geranium (which sharpens the rose's green facets) and a thread of jasmine for warmth.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the pear. It reads as a cool, watery fruit note, slightly underripe, not cloying, and the pink pepper adds a clean shimmer behind it. The fruit dissolves quickly, within twenty to thirty minutes, and the florals take over. Damask rose comes in strong, supported by geranium's green-vegetal edge and a soft jasmine that keeps the bouquet from going powdery. This is the loudest phase of the fragrance. By the two-hour mark, the white florals have settled and the rose begins to read warmer, almost jammy. The base materials are now the architecture: sandalwood's creaminess, cedarwood's dry wood-grain, a touch of patchouli that adds earth without darkness. Vanilla arrives late, not as a sugar note but as a soft rounding agent, like cashmere on bare skin. Musk ties the whole structure together. The fragrance holds at moderate sillage for the first three hours, then draws close to the skin. On fabric, the rose and sandalwood combination lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
Secret Garden is a rose-and-wood composition with a dewy fruit opening and a creamy, slightly sweet drydown. The progression from crisp pear and pink pepper through a lush Damask rose heart into a base of musk, cedarwood, sandalwood, patchouli, and vanilla gives the fragrance a clear arc that unfolds over the course of a wear. The moderate sillage keeps the scent close to the skin, which suits the composition's daytime character. In warm weather, the pear-rose-woods sequence opens up and breathes, the top notes lifting a little brighter and the base settling into a softer, more skin-like finish.
