The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lancôme launched La Vie Est Belle L'Extrait de Parfum in 2015 to mark its 80th anniversary, an opportunity to revisit the house's most celebrated fragrance with the depth only an Extrait concentration allows. Anne Flipo, Dominique Ropion, and Olivier Polge built this version around the same joyful core: blackcurrant brightness, white floral warmth, and the gourmand pull of praline. The difference is what 2015 luxury demands, more presence, more persistence, more weight on the skin as the evening unfolds. The Mellerio dits Meller jewelry collaboration on the limited bottle reinforces the anniversary stakes without changing what's inside the glass.
Iris is the structural choice here. Not just a pretty heart note but a bridge, cool and powdery enough to ground the opening's bright fruit, dry enough to face down the praline and vanilla that follow. In most fragrances the gourmand elements arrive and dominate. In L'Extrait they share space with something mineral and almost savory. Patchouli does the real work in the base, keeping tonka bean and praline from becoming mere candy. The result is sweet that doesn't apologize for itself, because something earthy is always holding it back.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to blackcurrant and pear, tart, bright, slightly icy. Then iris arrives, not as a replacement but as a counterweight, bringing its powdery coolness into the warmth. By hour two, jasmine and orange blossom are layered underneath, creamy and waxy without ever turning heavy. The drydown is where L'Extrait earns its concentration: praline and tonka bean take over, patchouli holds everything in place, and the vanilla doesn't arrive so much as seep through. On skin, expect 8 to 10 hours easily. On clothing, it lingers into the next morning, sweet, warm, and quietly present rather than loud.
Cultural impact
La Vie Est Belle is Lancôme's defining modern fragrance, a global success that spawned an entire collection. L'Extrait arrived in 2015 as the concentrated expression of that idea, and the Mellerio dits Meller jewelry edition raised the stakes for the anniversary year. The Extrait has since become the reference concentration for those who want the signature scent to last.
