The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 2023 Empreinte Animale Crystal Edition channels Lalique's oldest obsession: nature, captured in glass. René Lalique spent his career studying flora, fauna, and the female form, the animals were always there, lurking in the design archives, waiting. The crocodile was the logical choice for a house that built its reputation on power and precision. Its scale pressed into crystal, the Amazon-green stopper catching light like a single eye watching from still water. Sophia Grojsman took the Lalique de Lalique DNA and pushed it somewhere wilder, the rainforest's canopy, not the drawing room.
The note structure here is unusual: iris and orris root anchoring a rose-jasmine top that could easily tip into florist's shop territory, rescued by clove's warmth and a heart of blackcurrant leaf, that green, almost bitter note that smells like crushed stems and morning dew. Blackcurrant leaf isn't a common heart material. It requires confident application and rewards patience. Grojsman uses it here as a tether, keeping the florals grounded in something earthier, more complex than sweetness alone.
The evolution
The opening doesn't creep in. Jasmine and rose arrive fully formed, orris root adding that powdery dimension like face powder falling from its compact. Thirty minutes in, clove emerges as warmth rather than heat, the spices here are not aggressive, they're architectural. The heart takes over around the one-hour mark: blackberry sweetness softens the blackcurrant leaf's green snap, and pear adds texture without sweetness overload. This middle phase is where the fragrance earns its complexity, fruity without being childish, floral without being powdery all the way through. By the third hour, sandalwood and vanilla arrive. The drydown stays close, intimate, almost secretive, white musk doing what white musk does, keeping everything soft and skin-adjacent.
Cultural impact
500 bottles. That number alone tells you who this is for, the collector who understands that a fragrance can also be sculpture. The Empreinte Animale series has become Lalique's annual statement piece, each edition referencing a different creature from the house's Art Nouveau bestiary. The crocodile edition is the boldest yet, translating the animal's armored, powerful presence into crystal that catches light like scales catching sun.
