The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lacoste launched Elegance in 2007 as part of an expanding fragrance identity that stretched the brand beyond its iconic polo shirt. While the house had been building its olfactory portfolio since the 1980s, this release occupied a specific space: warm, approachable, and quietly confident. The bottle, designed by Denis Boudard, echoed the clean athletic geometry of the brand's visual language, rounded edges, uncluttered surfaces, while the juice inside traded court-side energy for something more contemplative. It was an elegant proposition, in the most literal sense.
What makes the composition interesting is its structural tension. The opening trio, peppermint, thyme, juniper, arrives cool and almost medicinal. The herbal quality reads like a winter morning. But the heart introduces nutmeg, cardamom, and black pepper, which carry warmth beneath their spice. And then there's the base: dark chocolate alongside sandalwood and amber. It's an unusual pairing for an EDT, the cocoa and wood together create something that feels both gourmand and grounded. The raspberry in the heart is a quiet player, there to soften the spice without announcing itself. The whole thing hangs together because none of the elements fight for dominance.
The evolution
The opening arrives crisp and immediate, peppermint cutting through like cold air, juniper adding a faint resinous edge. Thyme lingers just beneath, herbal and slightly bitter. This phase lasts roughly 20 to 30 minutes before the spices begin to assert themselves. Nutmeg and cardamom emerge next, warming the initial chill. Black pepper appears as a quiet jolt, then retreats. The raspberry is almost invisible, more of an impression than a note, softening the spice just enough. By the second hour, dark chocolate takes over. It doesn't arrive all at once; it seeps into the drydown alongside sandalwood, amber, and a clean musk. The final phase is intimate and close, this is not a fragrance that announces itself across a room. On fabric, the chocolate-sandalwood foundation can linger into the next day, though on skin it typically resolves within four to six hours.
Cultural impact
Elegance arrived in 2007 as part of a broader expansion of the Lacoste fragrance identity. The house had been building its scent portfolio since the 1980s, but this release marked a specific intent: a warm, approachable composition that reflected the brand's heritage of confident simplicity. Wearers describe it as a friendly fragrance, pleasant without aggression, suitable for daily wear across seasons. The moderate sillage and intimate projection suit environments where subtlety is valued. While discontinued, it retains a following among those who encountered it during its availability.
