The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Released in 2008, 1 Million arrived as Paco Rabanne's loudest statement in fragrance. The bottle itself is a bar of gold bullion designed by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, and the scent inside it carries the same visual logic. Perfumers Christophe Raynaud, Olivier Pescheux, and Michel Girard constructed a composition designed to project, to fill a room rather than sit close to the skin. The juice inside the gold is amber-colored, warm-looking, dense. From the first spray, the intent is legible: this is not a whisper. It opens cold and sharp, peppermint and red mandarin cutting through the air, then slides into a cinnamon-heavy heart that sweetens and deepens almost immediately. The base pulls toward leather and amber, long-lasting molecules that anchor the sweetness and give it weight.
What's interesting is the restraint hiding inside the boldness. The top is just two notes: red mandarin orange and peppermint. Cool, sharp, almost mentholated. Then cinnamon and rose absolute arrive, a spicy-floral combination that reads as much more complex than its four-note heart suggests. The base grounds everything with amberketal and leather, materials chosen for warmth and longevity. On skin, the notes layer rather than compete. The peppermint doesn't fight the cinnamon, it sharpens it. The rose absolute softens the spice without ever going powdery or old-fashioned.
The evolution
The first minutes are cold. Peppermint and blood orange hit bright and almost clean, the kind of opening that registers before the warmth arrives. Then the cinnamon moves in, and it arrives all at once, warming the citrus, sweetening the mint, pulling everything toward the center. The rose absolute in the heart doesn't read as floral in any traditional sense. It adds a jammy, almost candied sweetness that bridges the opening into the base. The leather takes over gradually, a warm leather accord that emerges as the mint and citrus burn off. The amberketal underneath gives it that golden, almost metallic warmth the bottle advertises. As the hours pass, the projection softens and the fragrance settles closer to the skin, but the materials stay present, recognizable even at low concentration.
Cultural impact
1 Million earned a Fragrance Foundation Hall of Fame award in 2025. The fragrance has spawned a range of flankers over the years, including 1 Million Absolutely Gold and 1 Million Intense, each riffing on the original's gold-and-spice formula while shifting one or two notes to create a new register. The flanker strategy speaks to the strength of the original composition: a base this recognizable can support variations without losing its identity. 1 Million Absolutely Gold pushes the metallic shimmer. 1 Million Intense goes darker, smokier, denser.
