The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Opal Energy launched in 2021, formulated by Nicole Mancini Issaq. The fragrance features Orpur® extracts from Givaudan, including ginger, lemon, cedarwood, patchouli, and sandalwood. These materials work together to create a composition that reveals different facets depending on the wearer and how the skin receives it. The ginger brings a clean, spiced heat that lifts the citrus brightness without overwhelming it. The lemon provides an immediate, sparkling quality that feels effervescent and alive. Cedarwood adds a dry, woody undertone that grounds the brighter top notes, while patchouli contributes an earthy depth that becomes more apparent as the fragrance develops. Sandalwood rounds the base with a creamy, warm presence that lingers close to the skin.
The Orpur® ginger in Opal Energy brings a clean, spiced heat that lifts the citrus without competing with it. This ingredient contributes a bright, almost effervescent quality to the opening, giving the lemon space to shine while adding a subtle warmth that prevents the top notes from feeling too sharp. In the base, the Orpur® cedarwood and sandalwood create a woody foundation that gives the drydown its characteristic warmth. Cedarwood adds a dry, slightly resinous quality that provides structure, while sandalwood contributes its signature creamy softness.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, lemon, ginger, and a sudden brightness that feels like the first minute of a sunrise. Anjou pear softens the citrus and gives it a slight sweetness, but the ginger is the star. It reads clean, almost like spice without fire. Then the white florals arrive. Not gently. Tuberose, orange blossom, and lily of the valley bloom simultaneously and with real intensity, dominating the middle phase in a way that can catch wearers off guard if they're expecting something restrained. The citrus has already receded by this point, and the tuberose takes over completely. It is heady. Almost aggressive. Then the warmth begins to settle. The woody base emerges slowly, sandalwood and cedarwood doing the work alongside patchouli's earthiness. The musk adds a skin-like warmth that rounds everything out. By the final phase, the fragrance is close and intimate, more skin than air.
Cultural impact
The Opal Energy launch brought elevated ingredients to the celebrity fragrance space through its use of Givaudan's Orpur line of extracts. This choice positioned the fragrance alongside higher-end niche offerings in terms of ingredient quality. The Orpur designation represents a specific grade of natural extract with optimized olfactory characteristics, typically reserved for more exclusive formulations. By incorporating these materials, KKW Fragrance demonstrated a commitment to quality ingredients that distinguished Opal Energy from typical celebrity scent offerings.
