The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thulooj joined Junaid Perfumes' lineup in 2014, a release rooted in the house's interest in producing light floral-fruity compositions that fit daily Gulf life. The fragrance opens with a fruit-and-floral daytime character that carries a clean, musked drydown rather than heavy resins, something a woman can spritz for work or errands without second-guessing the intensity. The brief was straightforward: keep the opening compact enough that the heart florals can breathe, then anchor everything in a single white musk base. The white musk itself reads as a soft, slightly creamy warmth, the kind of skin-scent that settles in close rather than announcing itself across a room.
The composition leans on pineapple paired with a tropical fruits accord at the top, which gives the opening its sunny character without requiring a dozen citrus boosters. That restraint matters. Many fruity florets collapse under the weight of their own sweetness, but Thulooj keeps the opening compact so the jasmine and lily of the valley can carry the heart without competition. The pineapple reads as ripe and juicy with a candied edge, while the tropical fruits accord adds a softer, rounder sweetness that prevents the opening from skewing too sharp.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are almost entirely pineapple and tropical fruits, sweet and juicy with a candied edge that reads more like ripe fruit than synthetic candy. The pineapple brings a bright, almost effervescent lift, while the tropical fruits accord underneath adds a rounder, more syrupy warmth that gives the opening some body. The jasmine arrives softly around the 20-minute mark, threading through the fruit like white flowers growing through green leaves, joined by lily of the valley's greener, almost dewy floralcy. The jasmine tends toward the creamy, indolic side rather than the sharp soap-floral side, which keeps it from feeling sharp against the fruit. The lily of the valley acts as a counterweight, pulling the sweetness back toward something cleaner and more aqueous.
Cultural impact
Thulooj carries the kind of wearability that lends itself to warmer months and casual settings, when heavier compositions can feel like too much. The fruit-and-floral opening reads as tropical and inviting without veering into the syrupy territory that puts some wearers off fruity fragrances, and the white musk base keeps the whole composition grounded in something clean and approachable. That balance makes it an easy reach for office hours, daily errands, or any situation where a quiet, pleasant scent is preferable to something loud.
