The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Psychoterratica series began as a collaborative experiment, a playful project inviting people into the design process. Psychoterratica II launched in 2020 as the second chapter, created by Euan McCall. What emerged was a fragrance built on an unusual tension: tropical fruit sitting atop damp, earthy soil. Lush and decaying at the same time. Not one without the other. The combination of ripe fruit and grounded earth creates a scent that feels both vibrant and rooted, bright yet deeply grounded. It's this duality that defines the composition, allowing sweetness and decay to coexist without either overwhelming the other.
The aged Tree Moss Absolute in Psychoterratica II carries something mushroom-adjacent, almost fungal, which is what gives the drydown its peculiar character. Guava and rhubarb provide the tropical brightness, but the soil tincture and moss undercut any temptation toward sweetness. Magnolia, honeysuckle, and pear add their own softer presence to the composition, bringing floral and fruity elements that weave through the denser notes. The result is a fragrance that resists easy categorization, fruity, yes. Earthy, definitely.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes announce themselves clearly. Grapefruit and cucumber arrive together, the citrus sharp, the cucumber cool and almost medicinal in its clarity. Orange threads through, keeping things bright. Then the guava arrives. It doesn't wait politely. Rhubarb adds a tartness that cuts through the sweetness before it can settle. The heart phase is where things get interesting. Magnolia and pear emerge, their softness in direct contrast to the preceding tartness. Pink pepper adds a slight prickle. But it's the mushroom lurking beneath that begins to assert itself, subtle but present. The honeysuckle sweetens it slightly, passion flower adds a tropical flourish, but the earthier notes are gaining ground. By hour four, the drydown has fully arrived. Cedar and patchouli anchor everything.
Cultural impact
Psychoterratica II occupies a unique position in the niche fragrance landscape. It doesn't smell like anything obvious, standing apart from more conventional fruited fragrances. Those who connect with it tend to find something worth returning to, drawn by its distinctive character and the way it balances tropical brightness with grounded earthiness.
