The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Euan McCall created Trimerous for Jorum Studio in 2019 with a specific ambition: to honor the iris flower without resorting to nostalgia. Rather than reaching for the traditional iris associations of powdery elegance and vintage charm, McCall wanted the note to feel contemporary and personal. The name itself carries meaning. Trimerous refers to something composed of three parts, and the fragrance explores a triptych of facets: the fresh, the muted, and the discarded. This conceptual framework shapes every decision in the composition, from the bright juniper opening to the quiet musk drydown. Jorum Studio, founded in Scotland, approaches fragrance with everyday humor and poetic sensibility, and Trimerous embodies that balance precisely.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast and balance. Orris root provides the emotional center, its perfumery value well-established, but McCall pairs it with unexpected companions. Suede adds texture without heaviness. Peach introduces a fruity sweetness that prevents the iris from becoming precious. Carrot seed brings an earthy, slightly vegetable quality that grounds the composition in something organic and real. The inclusion of ambergris, oud, and styrax provides the resinous depth that prevents the fragrance from becoming merely soft. Bergamot and juniper ensure the fresh facet has genuine aromatic impact.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through its triptych with intention. The fresh facet arrives through bergamot, juniper, and angelica, creating an aromatic brightness that serves as an entry point rather than a destination. The muted facet emerges as suede and peach soften the composition, with orris root taking center stage in its powdery, violet-scented glory. Ambergris adds a subtle marine quality while thyme grounds the sweetness with herbal restraint. The discarded facet manifests as the fragrance settles, not as something forgotten but as something essential made quiet. Oud and vanilla provide warmth while musk lingers, carrying traces of incense and styrax into the final hours. Each phase builds from the previous, creating a continuous arc rather than discrete stages.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 release, Trimerous has become a staple in the niche iris niche, often cited as Jorum Studio’s bestseller. Its playful yet sophisticated take on orris earned praise in fragrance forums for redefining powdery florals without veering into saccharine territory, positioning it as a go‑to scent for those seeking a refined, unisex statement.
