The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Elysian Santal arrived in 2024 as a collaboration between Jinx Smells and Hunayn, compressed into a run of just 38 bottles. Mysore sandalwood anchors the composition, present from start to finish as the structural element everything else orbits. Bulgarian rose, white rose, saffron, and honey in the heart create a warmth that reads like an offering rather than a decoration. The base adds Kashmiri musk and ambergris, giving the wood an animalic lean that keeps the composition grounded in something raw rather than polished. Limited release, animalic-leaning natural composition, the kind of release that disappears from availability almost immediately. The opening brings a green sharpness from neroli and mint that softens quickly as the florals take hold.
Mysore sandalwood carries a resinous density that grounds everything above it, creamy and full where other woody notes might feel thin. What makes this composition unusual is the dual rose treatment in the heart. Bulgarian rose and white rose appear side by side, layering dense sweetness against a lighter, cleaner facet. The saffron and tobacco appear together, lending a warm spice that shifts the composition away from anything purely floral. Kashmiri musk and ambergris in the base carry real weight.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are deceptive. Neroli and mint bring a green brightness that suggests something fresh, almost sharp in its clarity. Then the roses arrive. Bulgarian first, dense and almost syrupy, then white rose lifting the edges. Within forty minutes the honey and saffron settle into a warm, resinous sweetness that pulls the composition into richer territory. The Mysore sandalwood surfaces around the two-hour mark, creamy and slightly powdery, with Kashmiri musk threading underneath. As the hours pass, the composition tightens into a warm sandalwood-tobacco-ambergris skin scent. It doesn't fade so much as become part of whoever's wearing it. On clothing, the sandalwood and ambergris continue to register well into the later hours, warm, musky, faintly sweet.
Cultural impact
Elysian Santal occupies a specific corner of the natural perfume landscape, one where Mysore sandalwood, animalic musks, and rose traditions intersect. Just 38 bottles were produced, placing it among the smallest releases in the Jinx Smells catalog and in the Hunayn catalog alike. The composition draws from multiple olfactory traditions at once: Bulgarian rose and white rose reference European floral work, saffron and honey carry Middle Eastern weight, and Kashmiri musk and ambergris ground everything in a natural animalic base. Wearers who gravitate toward natural-musk and Mysore sandalwood compositions find it compelling.
