The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
IUNX was founded in Paris in 2003 with a philosophy rooted in elemental minimalism, placing single-note scents in unmarked bottles to let each fragrance stand as a pure sensory statement. After establishing itself with the L'Eau series, which explored aquatic simplicity, the brand looked toward more tactile territory. In 2004, they turned to earthier elements, and Splash Forte became their answer: a vibrant splash of spice that honored the brand’s refusal to overcomplicate. Perfumer Olivia Giacobetti, known for her work at IFF and her ability to modulate aromatic materials with precision, was tasked with capturing spice in its most direct form. She built the fragrance around nutmeg and bay leaf, using musk as the only softening agent, creating something that felt both new and very immediate.
The note profile of Splash Forte reflects IUNX broader philosophy of reduction. Rather than using opening notes to invite or base notes to anchor, the brand chose to eliminate those conventions entirely. The nutmeg and bay leaf heart is the entire fragrance, conceptualized as a focus point rather than a phase. The inclusion of cumin and red cedar serves a dual purpose: they support the nutmeg and bay leaf without overwhelming them, adding depth without complexity. Musk acts as the invisible hand that pulls everything tog ether, preventing the spices from becoming harsh while maintaining the composition’s essential clarity.
The evolution
The fragrance begins without ceremony, opening directly into the heart notes that define it. Nutmeg arrives first, bright and warming, followed closely by the herbaceous sharpness of bay leaf. Cumin enters to add earthiness, while red cedar grounds the composition with its dry, woody presence. Musk weaves through everything, keeping the spiced heart cohesive rather than jagged. As time passes, the fragrance remains largely unchanged, its heart notes simply softening slightly before fading. There is no substantial drydown, only a gradual exit. This linear arc is what IUNX intended, presenting spice as a singular, uninterrupted experience rather than a narrative with chapters.
Cultural impact
Since its 2004 debut, Splash Forte has become a quiet cult favourite among fans of spicy‑woody unisex scents. Its straightforward, elemental approach is often cited as a benchmark for modern minimalist perfumery, and wearers note its ability to command attention in close quarters without overwhelming the room. It sits alongside IUNX’s water series as the house’s first foray into richer, more tactile territory.
