The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Summer 2018 edition came from a straightforward brief: what does summer smell like when you filter it through Japanese restraint? Alberto Morillas, the nose behind countless Issey Miyake fragrances, approached the question by building upward from water rather than layering on more. Grapefruit and kiwi open bright, almost sharp. Coriander adds a green counterpoint that prevents the whole thing from going flat. The heart brings warmth through pineapple and a whisper of nutmeg. It's a summer flanker that earns its place in the collection by being exactly what it promises, warm weather in a bottle, no complications.
The note structure is deliberately lean. Each layer does one thing without stepping on the next. Grapefruit provides the initial burst of citrus brightness. Kiwi, often underused in perfumery, adds a watery sweetness that supports the aquatic theme. Coriander grounds the opening with an aromatic edge, herbal, slightly peppery. The heart shifts the temperature upward with pineapple's tropical warmth and nutmeg's soft spice. Then the base arrives: cypress and vetiver pull the composition back toward earth, toward something Mediterranean rather than strictly tropical. The structure holds because it never tries to do too much at once. Each phase hands off to the next cleanly.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to grapefruit, bright, insistent, impossible to ignore. Kiwi rides underneath, softer, adding juiciness without sweetness. Coriander arrives around the five-minute mark, its green quality tempering the citrus without fighting it. The transition to the heart takes about twenty minutes: pineapple opens like a door left ajar, warm and humid, then nutmeg slides in sideways with something almost edible. The drydown is where Morillas earns his reputation. Cypress appears gradually, bringing a dry woodiness that steadies the tropical warmth. Vetiver lingers underneath, earthy and quiet, long after the fruit has faded. On fabric, the cypress and vetiver hold for several hours. On skin, expect four to six hours of presence, with the base notes lasting longest.
Cultural impact
Summer flankers occupy a specific niche in fragrance culture, they offer warmth and accessibility without demanding commitment. The 2018 edition fits this tradition, bringing tropical fruit into conversation with the Issey Miyake aquatic signature. Community reception skews positive, with particular appreciation for the kiwi and pineapple combination.
