The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2018, Houbigant reached into its archives and pulled out one of the most storied florals in French perfumery. Quelques Fleurs, originally created by the house, was its statement on what a grand bouquet could be. The original had set a benchmark for floral richness that few houses have matched. The Collection Privée edition honors that ambition, placing lush indolic florals inside a more contemporary structure. The house maintains the same conviction with which the original was composed, building a floral statement that refuses restraint. The florals arrive in full, without apology, and the concentration is built to project.
The note architecture tells you everything about the intent. Four top notes, galbanum, tarragon, bergamot, lemon, function as a green, aromatic overture. They're sharp, almost medicinal at first contact. Then the heart notes arrive and the composition shifts. Jasmine absolute and tuberose anchor the middle; they carry the scent's warmth and its character. Around them, lily of the valley, violet absolute, and rose absolute add nuance. Clove and carnation bring a spiced undertone that prevents the florals from becoming merely sweet.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Galbanum and tarragon give the composition a green, almost bitter edge, bergamot adds citrus brightness, lemon sharpens it further. The aromatic character dominates the initial phase. The transition begins when the jasmine enters. Tuberose follows, carrying that characteristic waxy, indolic richness. Rose and orange blossom layer beneath, with clove adding warmth to what could otherwise feel too heady. As time passes, the florals begin their slow recession. Musk and civet take over. The oakmoss adds a mossy, chypre depth; sandalwood and orris provide creaminess and powder. The drydown is intimate, close to the skin. The full arc, opening to base, is the point. The cool, green beginning gives way to a rich floral middle, resolved by a warm, animalic close.
Cultural impact
The 2018 Collection Privée edition of Quelques Fleurs found an audience seeking bold, uncompromising fragrance in a landscape dominated by lighter constructions. The indolic richness, the animalic base, the sheer floral abundance define what Houbigant stands for. For those who remember what French perfumery could be, Quelques Fleurs L'Original is a direct line to that era. It doesn't pander. It persists. The lush indolic florals, the warm animalic base, and the sheer abundance of flowers signal a house that still believes a fragrance can make a statement without apology. This is perfume as conviction, not compromise.
