The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Urban Hipster was conceived around a very specific mood: the corner of a dimly lit bar where someone in a vintage jacket is reading a paperback and not waiting for anyone. The release marked a turn toward something smokier, moodier, and more obviously wearable after dark. Tobacco leads the composition, carrying a dry, slightly leathery weight, while red berries cut through the top with a tart, almost restless brightness. On skin, the fruit reads juicy and a little sharp, the kind of opening that pulls attention before the heavier notes settle in. As the hours pass, the tobacco softens into something warmer and rounder, losing its initial austerity and gaining a faint sweetness from the lingering berries.
The interplay between tobacco and red berries defines the composition from the first spray onward. On their own, tobacco leaves can read serious and almost solemn, a note with weight and gravitas but little lift. Bringing red berries into the top changed the shape of the fragrance entirely. The fruit cut through the leaf's density, added a flicker of sweetness, and gave the composition a slightly off-kilter opening that felt modern rather than traditional.
The evolution
When Urban Hipster first launched, it was framed almost exclusively as a tobacco fragrance, and the red berries were treated as a minor accent, a brief flash of brightness before the heavier notes took over. The early reviews often noted how quickly the fruit disappeared, how the opening spark faded into a dense, smoky heart within minutes. Over time, the role of the red berries became more widely discussed, with wearers pointing out how the tart sweetness kept the tobacco from reading too austere or too vintage. The base kept its original structure: a warm blend of woods, a touch of amber resin, and earthy vetiver that anchors the whole composition. Cedar and sandalwood give the dry-down its creamy, slightly milky backbone, while the amber adds a golden warmth that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Urban Hipster earned attention for how it handled the tobacco note, treating it less as a solitary, old-school statement and more as part of a conversation with brighter, fruitier elements. The red berries give the fragrance a contemporary edge, keeping the composition from reading as a straight tobacco soliflore and adding a playful, slightly unexpected twist to what could otherwise feel like a very traditional structure. Wearers often comment on the contrast between the opening's tart, almost chatty fruit and the heart's denser, more contemplative tobacco leaf.
