The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fleur et Papillon arrived in 2024 as part of the wider revival of interest in the maison's classical register. The name signals the composition's central gesture: something rooted and something in motion. The iris anchors, its cool rooty powder giving the fragrance a steady spine. The neroli lifts off with that distinctive orange blossom sharpness, bright and almost metallic in the opening minutes, carrying a faint green bitterness that recalls petitgrain. Tuberose and jasmine lend weight to what might otherwise drift away entirely, their creamy density pulling the composition back toward earth. White florals have a tendency in lesser compositions to read as either soapy or funereal, but here they're presented with a reverence that suits the house's haute parfumerie tradition.
What makes this composition interesting is the structural choice behind its opening. The neroli and mandarin aren't garnish, they're architecture. They give the iris somewhere to land, a bright platform that establishes the composition's altitude before the heavier florals begin their descent. The citrus reads as a deliberate choice rather than a concession to market expectations, and its presence in the top notes gives the entire fragrance a transparency that allows the later materials to register clearly.
The evolution
On skin, Fleur et Papillon begins with that neroli and mandarin lift, bright and almost bitter, the way orange blossom smells before the sun warms it. The first ten minutes feel like stepping outside on a cool morning, when the air still carries the night chill and the citrus notes have a particular crispness. By the thirty-minute mark the iris has taken hold, and the composition thickens into something sweeter and more grounded, the vanilla warming the iris's powder rather than burying it. The benzoin does quiet work in the background, a resinous hum that keeps the florals from floating off and gives the whole composition a sense of internal architecture. An hour in, tuberose and jasmine arrive from beneath, dense and creamy, and the citrus has all but vanished into memory.
Cultural impact
Fleur et Papillon is a floral for someone who'd rather be asked what they're wearing than have it guessed from ten paces. It rewards close attention, the kind of fragrance that reveals itself in stages and asks for a certain patience from its wearer. There's nothing shouty about it, no aggressive sillage designed to fill a room, and that's precisely the point. The composition speaks to a particular sensibility, one that values intimacy over impact and craft over convenience.
