The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Malva comes from Helan's Fiori Radici Frutti collection. Mallow, the namesake, anchors the composition with a soft, herbaceous quality, less showy than jasmine or rose, more of a quiet presence in the blend. Blackcurrant and peach blossom lift the top with a fruit-forward sweetness, juicy and rounded, the kind of brightness that pulls you in before the deeper notes settle. From there, the pyramid opens outward through pittosporum, tuberose, and marigold, each adding its own shade. The mallow stays present through every phase, a thread of green softness that ties the fruit to the florals and keeps the whole composition feeling like something grown rather than constructed.
Pittosporum is the unusual note in Malva, a green, slightly resinous presence that gives the heart its structure. Combined with the mallow and the tart edge of red currant, it creates a backbone that keeps the white florals grounded and prevents them from drifting into pure sweetness. The currant in particular pulls double duty, its sharp fruitiness cutting through the creamy density of mallow and tuberose while echoing the blackcurrant and peach blossom that opened the fragrance. In the base, ebony, labdanum, and sandalwood build warmth without heaviness.
The evolution
Malva opens with a burst of cassis and peach blossom that reads almost edible, like fruit left too long on a warm counter. Marigold edges in, adding a slightly bitter, herbal quality that keeps the sweetness from becoming cloying. As the fragrance settles, the mallow and tuberose come forward, creamy and white, while the currant from the heart keeps a tart thread running underneath. The pittosporum is the quiet surprise, a green presence that doesn't announce itself but shifts the whole composition into something more grown. Later in the wear, the florals step back. Cedar and sandalwood settle in, along with labdanum's amber warmth and a soft musk that clings to skin. The vetiver grounds everything with a clean, earthy pull. The woody base carries a faint sweetness, and the overall impression is one of warmth and quiet complexity.
Cultural impact
Malva sits within Helan's broader portfolio of Italian-inspired compositions, alongside releases like Fior di Talco and I Muschi. Within the collection, it represents the fruit-and-floral thread that runs through much of the house's work, a category where recognizable ingredients take center stage rather than abstract accords. The pairing of mallow with blackcurrant and peach blossom gives it a distinct identity, one that sets it apart from the powdery softness of Fior di Talco or the mossy depth of I Muschi.
