The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kaffa borrows its name from Kaffa, and reviewers have speculated the reference points to an Ethiopian wild coffee variety. Helan translated that reference into a fragrance built less around the coffee note itself and more around the world of an Italian espresso bar, where bitter almond confections sit next to the sugar bowls. Launched in 2019, the composition treats coffee as the structural skeleton rather than the headline, letting licorice and vanilla carry the conversation while orange blossom and jasmine keep things luminous. The coffee note functions almost like a shadow under the brighter aromatics, providing depth and a slightly bitter counterweight to the sweetness of vanilla and the marzipan edges of almond.
What makes Kaffa structurally interesting is how it refuses to commit to either gourmand or floral. The licorice and bitter almond pull it toward confectionery. The orange blossom absolute and jasmine refuse to let it collapse into dessert. The result sits somewhere between a pastry counter and a perfumery counter, which is exactly where the composition feels most comfortable. The sweetness is restrained, never cloying, and the almond note carries a pleasant bitter edge that keeps the whole structure from tipping over into syrup.
The evolution
The opening is a sharp, almost confrontational pour of anise and licorice, spiked with vanilla's warmth and the marzipan bitterness of almond. The first impression carries a bright, almost medicinal coolness from the anise, which cuts against the rounded sweetness of vanilla and gives the opening a tense, pulled-taut quality. It softens quickly as the brighter top notes begin to settle. Then coffee arrives, not as a straight shot but as the dark, slightly burnt undertone of something brewed hours ago, a deep, low-register bitterness that sits beneath everything else rather than riding on top. Pink pepper threads through this phase like a thin crack of heat, and orange blossom absolute blooms just enough to keep the composition from going entirely nocturnal. Jasmine sits underneath, pale and persistent, balancing the gourmand weight.
Cultural impact
Kaffa arrived in 2019 from the Italian house Helan, a brand mainly distributed through pharmacies and health food stores. The name itself signals intent: Kaffa is the Ethiopian region long credited as the birthplace of the arabica coffee plant, and the composition leans directly into that reference through a heart where coffee, licorice, anise, and bitter almond share the structural load. One reviewer describes the bottle as a simple design with a plastic cap, a quiet presentation that lets the juice inside do the talking.
