The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Frames Oud arrived in 2017 as part of the Frames collection, a line where GianMarco Venturi treated scent as a wardrobe component rather than a standalone statement. Oud was the most assertive entry in the set, composed to project rather than whisper. The brand's own copy calls it a "strongly and charismatic spicy and woody fragrance" with a "smoky character, emphasized by the preciousness of Oud," leaning into a dense, resinous profile anchored by oud rather than ornamenting the material with sweetness. There's no floral bridge softening the agarwood, no praline cushion beneath it. What you get is a composition built on smoke, spice, and wood, the kind of scent that announces itself across a room and refuses to dissolve into the background.
The frankincense in the opening carries a resinous weight, dense and slightly liturgical, setting a tone of gravity before the oud even arrives. It's a dry smoke, not the sweet church-incense variety, more like embers than censers. Patchouli and palisander rosewood in the heart maintain that dryness, adding an earthy, woody depth that feels structural rather than soft. Papyrus introduces a subtle papery grain, a quiet preview of the leather-and-tobacco territory the base will eventually claim.
The evolution
The opening belongs to lemon and frankincense, and the brightness catches you off guard. Lemon peel cuts through sharp and clean, almost citric enough to read as a cologne in the first few minutes, while the cardamom underneath adds a green, eucalyptus-leaning cool. Frankincense weaves through it with smoke, not sweetness, more smoldering resin than candied peel. That opening is the bait. The oud enters quickly, and it doesn't arrive as the syrupy Middle Eastern variety. This oud is dry, almost medicinal, layered over patchouli that pushes earthy and slightly dirty. Palisander rosewood adds a creamy-woody middle register, and the papyrus introduces a subtle leather grain. The composition shifts from bright-spicy to heavy-woody without warning, like walking from a sunlit lobby into a room with the curtains drawn.
Cultural impact
Frames Oud occupies a particular position in the oud landscape, composed with enough structural restraint to appeal to wearers who find many designer ouds too sweet or too ornamented. The brand's own positioning, "smoky character, emphasized by the preciousness of Oud," signals a deliberate lean toward gravity rather than accessibility, leaning into smoke and spice where others reach for rose and amber. Within Italian fragrance culture, where leather-tobacco profiles carry serious lineage, Frames Oud reads as a more austere, less citrus-bright descendant of that tradition.
