The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Wings for Men landed in 1994, composed by Jean-Claude Delville for Giorgio Beverly Hills. The name suggested something lifted, elevated. Delville built it as an aromatic fougère, a structure that had long defined masculine scent, but he gave it a clean, contemporary feel. Citrus brightened the opening. Lavender, listed as a top note, added an herbal freshness that hit first. A warm amber and cedar base gave it longevity. The result was a fragrance that could open a boardroom or close a bar, versatile in the way that actually matters.
What makes Wings for Men distinctive is its willingness to sit in the tension between crisp and warm. The lavender in the opening brings a bright, sharp quality, lifted by bergamot and neroli into something that reads modern. The white florals in the heart, jasmine, lily of the valley, add a softness that keeps the aromatic structure from feeling harsh. Then the base resolves it all: amber warmth, tonka bean's subtle sweetness, cedar's dry wood. Oakmoss adds depth. It's a composition that knows what it wants to be and doesn't overthink it.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Bergamot and neroli cut through the lavender with a citrus brightness that reads clean and confident. The green notes add structure, a slight sharpness that prevents the lavender from feeling soft. Then the heart arrives: jasmine and geranium introduce themselves gradually, the florals threading through the herbal base rather than overwhelming it. Clary sage keeps things grounded. By the second hour, the amber and tonka bean have warmed everything up. The drydown brings amber warmth, close to the skin, warm, slightly sweet, with cedar and musk lingering for the remaining hours.
Cultural impact
Wings for Men arrived in 1994, entering a market that had shifted toward cleaner, more structured men's fragrances. The composition occupied a specific space: aromatic enough to feel masculine, citrus-forward enough to feel modern, warm enough to last. The scent projected confidence without aggression, a quality that made it stand apart. It spoke clearly without shouting.
