The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Smile arrived in 2015 as part of Essence's #mymes sage line, a series that translates everyday digital emotions into scent. Perfumer Amandine Galliano was tasked with capturing the upbeat feeling of a smiling emoji, a burst of tropical joy that feels instantly shareable. The brief called for a bright opening that would feel familiar and cheerful, rooted in tropical fruit notes that anyone could recognize and immediately enjoy. Galliano built the opening around coconut and mandarin orange, two notes that communicate warmth and sunshine without any pretense. The goal was always accessibility combined with genuine quality, a fragrance that could feel personal while also feeling like a universal mood.
The note selection reflects a clear philosophy: tropical joy should be instantly recognizable and universally appealing. Coconut provides the creamy anchor that makes the opening feel sun-kissed and beach-ready. Mandarin orange cuts through with bright citrus energy, preventing the coconut from becoming too heavy. Passion fruit and pineapple amplify the tropical effect, creating an opening that feels genuinely lush. The heart pairs frangipani with apple to bridge the gap between tropical and temperate, ensuring the fragrance feels balanced rather than one-note.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a burst of tropical fruit that hits immediately upon application. Coconut and mandarin orange create the first impression, their combination offering both creamy texture and sharp citrus energy. Passion fruit and pineapple join within seconds, adding a layered tropical depth that makes the opening feel rich rather than simple. This bright beginning lasts roughly fifteen to twenty minutes before the fruit notes begin to recede. The heart introduces frangipani, its creamy tropical floral quality taking over smoothly. Apple slips in alongside, providing a crisp counterpoint that keeps the floral heart from becoming heavy. Tog ether these two notes create a heart that feels sunny and relaxed, the kind of sweetness that invites rather than overwhelms. The drydown arrives gradually, with musk and amber creating a warm, skin-close aura. Sandalwood adds a subtle woody nuance and vanilla completes the base, giving the final phase a sweet, comforting finish that lingers for hours after the initial application.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 debut, Smile has become a go‑to scent for social‑media‑savvy shoppers who associate its bright fruit opening with the optimism of emoji culture. Wearers often mention it as the perfect ‘good‑mood’ spritz for brunches or casual meet‑ups, positioning it alongside other playful #mymes sage releases in the niche community.
