The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Essence launched Like a Million Miles Away in 2013 as part of a trio of fragrances released that March alongside Like a Rollercoaster Ride and Like a Jump in the Pool. The collection was built around movement and escape, each name a different kind of departure. This one promised something specific: the thrill of arriving somewhere new, a city that doesn't quite exist yet in your memory. The bright citrus-topped tropical pyramid was designed to evoke that first-hour feeling of a trip, before familiarity sets in.
What makes this composition work is the tension between the loud, happy opening and the quieter base underneath. Mango is notoriously tricky, it can read synthetic or one-dimensional if the blend is cheap. Here, the grapefruit and mandarin give it something to push against, keeping the top from feeling flat. The praline in the heart doesn't compete with the mango so much as answer it: sweetness meets sweetness, but darker, warmer. It's the move from 'tropical cocktail on arrival' to 'evening, somewhere unfamiliar.'
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright, mango dominates, with mandarin and grapefruit providing the citrus structure that stops it from becoming syrupy. Thirty minutes in, the praline arrives, and the scent shifts from bright to soft. The rose appears briefly, almost shyly, before the plum takes over the heart's darker sweetness. By the second hour, cedar and vanilla have settled in. The sillage drops from moderate to intimate. The drydown, what remains after three to four hours, is warm, powdery, close to the skin. Vanilla and musk, with a whisper of cedar underneath. Not a beast by any measure, but it lingers in the right way: someone leaning in close will find it.
Cultural impact
Like a Million Miles Away sits within Essence's collection as the 'escape' option, the fragrance for the person who wants to smell like they're somewhere else, even if they're just commuting. It's been discontinued, but it remains a cult favorite among those who found it. The sweet-fruity-gourmand profile attracts newcomers to fragrance and seasoned wearers alike who appreciate its unapologetic joy.
