Francis Kurkdjian built U by Ungaro around a single challenge: what happens when jasmine stops being polite? In 2007, floral fragrances played it safe, soft, sweet, easily loved. U by Ungaro refused that script. The brief was simple on paper: take the house's Mediterranean boldness and compress it into something wearable, then push one note past its comfort zone. Kurkdjian chose jasmine. Not as a romantic gesture, but as a statement.
What makes this work is the tension Kurkdjian introduces from the start. Jasmine's creamy, almost indolic character could easily tip into stereotype. Instead, saffron's dry, slightly bitter warmth cuts through before the sweetness can settle. The combination isn't immediately obvious, it requires a perfumer who understands that restraint creates intrigue.
