The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Potion arrived in 2011 as the Caten twins' second statement in fragrance, following the debut He Wood. Where their first scent explored the idea of a tree, Potion was meant to feel like liquid alchemy, ingredients pulled from old apothecary shelves and chemical work shops. The twins gave Annick Ménardo the brief to create a scent that felt both scientific and sensual, drawing on her expertise in combining unexpected materials. Ménardo, known for her bold, editorial approach, responded with a composition that opens with sharp, green notes and evolves into a warm, spiced heart, ultimately settling into a cozy, amber-rich base. The result is a fragrance that feels like a modern potion, blending the precision of a laboratory with the warmth of a hearth.
The note selection in Potion reflects a philosophy of contrast and balance. The opening trio of thyme, angelica, and mint sets a sharp, herbal tone, reminiscent of medicinal herbs and fresh greenery, establishing an immediate sensory impact. This is intentionally contrasted with the warm, spiced heart, where cinnamon and black pepper introduce a cozy, inviting warmth that feels like a return to a hearth on a cool day. The rose and gentian add complexity, ensuring the heart is not merely warm but also layered with floral and bitter nuances. The drydown then brings a smooth, enveloping warmth through amber, cashmere wood, patchouli, and musk, creating a finish that feels both creamy and earthy.
The evolution
The evolution of Potion begins the moment it touches skin, where the opening notes of thyme, angelica, and mint make their presence known. The thyme arrives with an aromatic, slightly medicinal edge, while the angelica adds a green, root-like bitterness, and the mint delivers a cooling freshness that feels like a blast of clean air. This initial phase lasts about 15 minutes, creating a sharp, herbal impression that is both invigorating and somewhat unconventional. As time passes, the heart notes take over, introducing a warm, spiced character. Cinnamon and black pepper become the dominant players, offering a cozy, slightly exotic warmth that contrasts sharply with the cool opening. The rose in the heart provides a subtle, soft floral note that tempers the spice, while the gentian adds a bitter, herbal nuance that keeps the composition grounded and prevents it from becoming too sweet. This heart phase can last several hours, revealing new facets as the spices meld with the floral and bitter elements.
Cultural impact
Potion quickly earned a reputation as a modern alchemical scent, appealing to men who appreciate a blend of fresh herbs and warm spice without veering into overt gourmand territory. Its mint-spice contrast makes it a conversation starter, often mentioned alongside DSquared²’s He Wood as the house’s signature balance of urban edge and natural vigor. The moderate sillage suits city life, while the amber-cashmere drydown draws compliments in cooler evenings, cementing its place in the niche of sophisticated yet approachable men’s fragrances.
