The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
DSQUARED2, the Milan-based brand founded by Canadian twin brothers Dean and Dan in 1995, has built a reputation for merging rugged Canadian wilderness with Milanese tailoring. In 2014 the twins asked perfumer Daphne Bugey to intensify the woody conversation that began with He Wood in 2007. Bugey chose to open Intense He Wood with a vivid violet leaf-violet duet, supported by aquatic notes and a discreet vein of incense, before steering the formula into a robust heart of vetiver, guaiac wood, cedarwood and sandalwood. The drydown brings pine resin, amber and musk, creating a warm, resinous finish that reinforces the brand's timber-forward identity while staying close to the skin.
Bugey's note philosophy begins with a crisp violet-leaf and violet opening that signals freshness, tempered by aquatic notes and a hint of incense that adds subtle depth. The heart, built around vetiver, guaiac wood, cedarwood and sandalwood, creates a dense smoky timber core, with sandalwood softening the harsher woods and providing a creamy bridge to the drydown. The final pine-amber-musk drydown locks everything into a warm, resinous finish that stays close to the skin, making the scent versatile enough for both office days and casual evenings.
The evolution
The evolution of Intense He Wood starts with a swift, fresh hit of violet leaf and violet absolute, a green-floral strike that feels dewy and slightly metallic, quickly supported by aquatic notes and a veil of incense that lend a whisper of smoke. Within the first half hour the violet greenness recedes as vetiver steps forward, its earthy, slightly tarry character anchoring the composition while guaiac wood, cedarwood and sandalwood lay down a dense, roasted timber heart that remains creamy and carries a subtle heat that resonates with the warm amber that follows. As the hours pass the heart slowly dissolves into the drydown, where pine resin, amber and musk deliver a warm, resinous finish that lingers close to the skin for up to eight hours without becoming overwhelming. Throughout the entire evolution, the violet-leaf freshness and incense whisper coexist with the robust wood notes, giving the fragrance a modern edge without sacrificing its masculine, forest-like essence.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 debut, Intense He Wood has become a go‑to for men who picture themselves as modern explorers, city dwellers who crave a forest escape after hours. Wearers often cite the violet leaf opening as a signature cue that sets it apart from typical woody colognes, and its balanced sillage makes it a staple in both office and weekend wardrobes.
