The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Donna Karan launched the Be Delicious collection in 2004, built around a signature green apple note. Eight years later, in 2012, the brand introduced Be Delicious Hearts The World, a limited-edition series devoted to four cities that captured different facets of the brand's urban spirit. NYC joined London, Paris, and Rio. Maurice Roucel, the nose behind Be Delicious from the beginning, returned to create the NYC interpretation, maintaining the original composition. Roucel knew the original formula captured something essential about city life, the energy and rhythm that defines the urban experience. The composition brings that same metropolitan spirit to life through a green apple foundation paired with florals that unfold in layers.
The note structure of Be Delicious NYC holds an unusual tension. Cucumber and grapefruit at the top create a watery, almost clinical freshness, the kind that reads as cool confidence on a summer morning. Magnolia bridges the gap between these cool top notes and the richer florals underneath, offering a soft fleshiness that prevents the opening from staying purely aquatic. What makes this composition stand out is the restraint in the heart. Tuberose often dominates, announcing itself loudly and refusing to share space. Here, Roucel positions it as an undertone rather than a headline, the floral presence that makes you realize the freshness was never the point.
The evolution
The opening of Be Delicious NYC arrives like a city morning in June, crisp, hydrated, full of possibility. Cucumber and grapefruit hit the skin with the immediacy of cold water on warm skin. There is no hesitation. The magnolia arrives quickly, soft and velvety, preventing the citrus from reading as cleaning product. This is the first hand-off: citrus cedes to floral before you notice the transition happening. Twenty minutes in, the green apple becomes the connecting tissue. It bridges the cool opening and the warmer florals that are now establishing themselves, lily of the valley providing that clean, almost dewy sweetness, rose offering structure without heaviness. The tuberose begins to surface, but unlike in many compositions, it does not take over. It deepens. It adds dimension without demanding attention. By the second hour, the florals have settled into something quieter and more personal. This is when the fragrance becomes intimate, close to the skin, revealed rather than announced.
Cultural impact
Be Delicious launched in 2004 with a green apple note that quickly stood out. The original fragrance established a distinctive fresh floral character that became a signature. Be Delicious NYC, released in 2012 as part of the Hearts The World limited-edition city series, maintains that core identity. Roucel kept the original structure intact and let the florals breathe. For wearers familiar with the original, the NYC edition feels like a quieter, more confident version. The green apple note anchors the scent, providing crisp freshness.
