The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Acqua Wood arrived in 2015 as a successor to the Acqua Attiva line Collistar first released in 2009. Daphné Bugey signed the composition, bringing a perspective the brand described as feminine chords woven into masculine structure. The name carries the tension directly: water and wood, cool and warm, fresh and grounded. It was designed for the man who moves between coastal air and evening warmth without changing scent. The opening citrus and pepper give way to a lavender and clary sage heart that feels herbal and sun-warmed, while the woody base of cedar, sandalwood, and guaiac settles close to the skin, offering warmth that lingers without becoming heavy.
Lavender and clary sage keep the middle Mediterranean, herbal, sun-warmed rather than clinical. The cedar-guaiac-sandalwood base does something rare: it stays warm without becoming heavy. Musk holds it close, wrapping the drydown in a soft intimacy. The herbal character of the heart notes blends seamlessly with the woody foundation, creating a smooth transition that feels natural and cohesive. Each layer builds on the last, with the aromatic freshness of the sage and lavender tempering the richness of the woods.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and herbal, lemon leaf and bergamot, black pepper cutting through with a clean, crisp edge. Twenty minutes in, the lavender and clary sage arrive. That's the heart: aromatic, clean, slightly powdery in a good way. The drydown is where Acqua Wood earns its name. Cedar and sandalwood settle into skin, with the woody notes warming and softening as the fragrance develops. The scent evolves from sharp citrus to herbal brightness, eventually settling into a smooth, close-to-skin warmth that feels both grounded and intimate.
Cultural impact
Acqua Wood sits comfortably in the woody-aromatic category, accessible without being generic, confident without being aggressive. The fragrance captures Mediterranean character through its blend of herbal and woody notes, creating something that feels both familiar and distinct. It's the kind of scent a man reaches for when he wants something that feels present without being overwhelming.
