The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Un Bois arrived in 2020 as a study in restraint. Perfumers Amelie Bourgeois and Anne-Sophie Behaghel composed a fragrance that opens bright and clean, then settles into something warmer and more personal. The name says it all, Un Bois, or 'a wood.' Nothing more, nothing less. It is a fragrance named for exactly what it is, presenting cedar and vetiver in their most direct form. The materials chosen, Haitian vetiver, Indian papyrus, Gurjan Balsam, speak without embellishment, creating a woody character that feels honest rather than constructed. Each note arrives without fanfare, allowing the natural dryness of cedar to meet the mineral warmth of vetiver in a way that feels inevitable rather than designed.
What makes Un Bois interesting is its restraint. The opening burst of black pepper and bergamot could easily give way to something louder, but instead the composition pulls back. Ambroxan, the synthetic ambergris accord, threads through the heart, giving the cedar a mineral warmth that feels like skin, not air. The base layers Haitian vetiver and Indian papyrus with Gurjan Balsam, creating an earthy drydown that stays close rather than projecting.
The evolution
The opening hits clean, black pepper's dry spice meets Italian bergamot's bright citrus, creating a sharp, invigorating first impression. Then the hand-off begins. Ambroxan and Virginia cedar arrive together, warming the composition without changing its direction. The cedar here is subtle, more texture than statement. What follows is a slow, quiet evolution. Vetiver and papyrus arrive in the drydown, bringing an earthy, slightly smoky quality that grounds everything. Gurjan Balsam lingers in the background, adding a resinous warmth that rounds the composition without ever becoming heavy. The sillage stays moderate throughout, this is a fragrance designed to be discovered rather than announced. It fades gracefully into a quiet skin scent that someone standing very close would still notice, leaving a subtle impression that invites rather than demands attention.
Cultural impact
Un Bois occupies a specific space in the woody fragrance landscape, warm, spicy, and intimate rather than performative. The composition avoids flashy declarations, instead offering something quieter: a fragrance for someone who wants to smell like themselves without excess. The combination of black pepper and bergamot in the opening creates a crisp, inviting entry before the woody heart takes over. Ambroxan threads through, lending a mineral warmth to the cedar that makes the fragrance feel like an extension of the wearer rather than a separate layer.
