The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lúnasa is named for the ancient Celtic harvest month of August, marking a liminal moment when summer's warmth still lingers but autumn's promise begins to stir. Cloon Keen Atelier built this fragrance as a kind of olfactory libation to that transition: the sun still strong but the year already turning. Perfumer Céline Guivarc'h composed it around the tension between brightness and depth, citrus and clover against ambergris and vetiver. The citrus notes burst with immediate clarity, bright and tart, while the clover brings an unexpected green complexity that feels like fresh-cut stems and morning dew. As the fragrance develops, the ambergris and vetiver emerge as a quiet anchor, creating a sophisticated interplay between lightness and depth.
What makes Lúnasa work is the clover. It appears as a heart note, bringing a green quality that reads as actual cut stems, the smell of grass underfoot on a dewy morning. Guivarc'h pairs it with Nashi pear, a delicate fruit note that adds texture without sweetness, and white rose rather than damask, which keeps the floral heart cooler and more restrained. The ambergris in the base is the quiet anchor, animalic without being aggressive, giving the drydown a skin-close quality that lasts well beyond what the initial brightness promises.
The evolution
Lúnasa opens with mandarin and neroli, bright, citrusy, immediate. The Nashi pear smooths the edges into something almost dewy. The clover arrives as the fragrance develops, green and insistent, pushing the citrus back. The white rose and violet step in next, not to soften but to deepen; these aren't delicate florals here, they're cool and slightly bitter against the green. The drydown takes its time. Galbanum and vetiver create an earthy, slightly bitter base, while the ambergris adds a marine-animalic warmth that gradually emerges. Patchouli ties everything together with a quiet earthiness. The green eventually fades as the fragrance settles, but the ambergris-vetiver base lingers close and intimate, maintaining that balance between brightness and depth that defines the composition.
Cultural impact
Lúnasa uses clover as a heart note and ambergris in the base, placing it among the more unusual ingredient choices in contemporary fragrance. The composition offers Irish green without the usual fog or mossy clichés, presenting something distinctive rather than familiar. The cool floral heart and earthy base create a fragrance that feels both grounded and refined, appealing to those who appreciate unusual materials and nuanced scent construction.
