The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alto Mar, Portuguese for "high sea", is named for that moment the Atlantic horizon stretches unbroken toward the sky. Daphné Bugey built this fragrance with an eye toward the coast, drawing on the openness of the sea and the herbs that grow along Portuguese shorelines. Nine decades of Musgo Real heritage inform its structure, but the spirit is contemporary, energetic, carrying the sensation of salt air in motion. The fragrance captures the feeling of a morning coastal breeze, the kind that carries both freshness and warmth in equal measure.
The pairing of absinthe and jasmine is unusual, absinthe brings bitterness, a green medicinal quality you'd associate withchartreuse or certain fougère structures, while jasmine adds softness that could get lost entirely. Bugey keeps them in conversation rather than conflict. The ozonic lift from Calone never fully disappears; it threads through the entire wear, a reminder of sea air even in the drydown. Cashmere wood and tonka bean prevent the base from becoming heavy, warm without sweetness, creamy without being edible. The structure reads as coastal in the way that Portugal actually is: wind, stone, green things growing in the cracks, not coconut and suntan lotion.
The evolution
It hits sharp. Mint and anise announce themselves immediately, cold, green, almost aggressive in the opening moments. Then the sea air arrives, not as a note but as an effect, the Calone opening like a window in a room that was too warm. The herbal heart takes over as the top notes soften. Rosemary and absinthe dominate, with jasmine softening the edges just enough to keep it from reading as medicinal. This phase offers green complexity that rewards attention, the interplay between herb and flower creating subtle shifts as time passes. The drydown is quiet and warm. Cashmere wood and sandalwood arrive without fanfare, vetiver and exotic woods anchoring the composition with earthy depth. Tonka bean adds a creaminess that feels earned rather than obvious. The ozonic quality never fully disappears.
Cultural impact
The moderate sillage, the herbal complexity, the restraint of the drydown, this fragrance rewards patience. It speaks to those who appreciate nuanced compositions, where multiple layers unfold over hours rather than announcing themselves all at once. The scent invites closer attention, revealing new facets with each wear. Those drawn to green, ozonic fragrances with an herbal backbone will find much to explore here, a fragrance that asks something of its wearer without demanding anything unreasonable.
