Falkar belongs to Bvlgari's Le Gemme collection, a series that takes its name from the idea of precious materials distilled into fragrance form. Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud created this one in 2019 as a statement piece for the man who doesn't shop for permission. The brief, if there was one, seems to have been to work with materials known for their depth and persistence. Oud, black musk, cypriol oil, frankincense, saffron, each ingredient chosen for its weight, its staying power, its willingness to occupy space rather than fade quietly into the background. Together they create something that announces itself without apology, a composition built from materials with enough presence to hold attention on their own terms.

What makes Falkar unusual is how the leather accord stays present even as other notes arrive. In most oud-heavy compositions, the smoky-wood character softens into incense within an hour. Here, the black musk and cypriol oil keep the fragrance grounded in something mineral and animal, close to the skin but never absent. The saffron doesn't sweeten the composition. Instead, it adds a faint medicinal sharpness that extends the opening phase, layering the top notes into something with more dimension than a typical Oriental formula.

The first five minutes are all nutmeg and cinnamon, sharp and bright against the darker base waiting underneath. Then cypriol oil and frankincense move in, not replacing the spice but surrounding it, anchoring it. By the 30-minute mark, the composition has settled into a smoky, leathery warmth that stays close to the skin. The oud forms the foundation of the drydown, a base note that holds the structure steady alongside black musk. That black musk is the thread that runs through everything, keeping the drydown intimate rather than projecting, a scent you have to lean in to find. What's left on fabric after the main progression has passed is a faint trace of warmth, the kind of thing that makes someone ask who was in the room before you.
