Man BVB Fan Edition arrived in 2018 as Bruno Banani's official tribute to Borussia Dortmund, the German football club whose identity runs through every detail of the release. It was a collector's edition, limited in production, and unmistakably a fan piece: designed for the supporter who wanted their allegiance on skin, not just on a scarf. Bernard Ellena composed the juice, and the brief wasn't subtle in the slightest. It was Dortmund DNA translated into an eau de toilette, a confident color statement made wearable through scent rather than fabric. The opening brings a burst of star anise and basil, bright and herbal with an almost licorice-like sweetness curling around the green sharpness of the basil leaf.
What makes this composition interesting is the collision between gourmand warmth and aromatic edge, and it plays out note by note in a way that keeps pulling you back to the wrist. Star anise and basil open the door with a sharp herbal jolt, the anise lending a cool sweetness that the basil cuts through with green, almost peppery energy. The evolution
The opening arrives fast and sharp. Star anise and basil crack against lavender in the first ten minutes, bright and almost medicinal, the kind of green-spice lift that announces itself at a doorway. By the thirty-minute mark, the lavender softens and the coffee moves up. This is where the scent changes rooms. Cumin hums underneath, giving the heart a faintly animal warmth, while heliotrope dusts everything with a powdery almond sweetness. Clove sharpens the edges. The drydown takes its time. Tonka bean and vanilla settle in around the four-hour mark, and patchouli does the structural work while cedar keeps things from going syrupy. What's left on skin at hour six is a low, warm haze of vanilla, tonka, and wood. It doesn't fade so much as sink closer to the body, becoming something you catch in a sweater the next morning.
