The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Imari 2015 is a 30th-anniversary reissue of one of Avon's most successful fragrances, originally introduced in 1985. Avon re-released the composition in 2015 alongside Imari Seduction and a new Imari Elixir, all in redesigned flacons, to celebrate three decades of a scent that had earned a devoted following. The 2015 version preserves the core that made the original resonate while updating the presentation. The fragrance was created by David Beach and Thomas DiGiacomo, two perfumers whose work for Avon spans a wide catalogue of accessible florals and orientals. Their task here was straightforward but exacting: honor a composition that wearers had been reaching for across three decades without simply photocopying it.
What makes the composition distinctive is the tension between aldehyde brightness and iris-rose depth, two languages that don't always share a sentence. Aldehydes lift the opening into something almost carbonated, sparkling and abstract, while the heart collapses into a dense, powdery iris with rose threading through it. That contrast, fizzy-topped richness, is the structural trick that gives Imari its signature. The base of patchouli, amber, and vanilla grounds everything in a warm, slightly sweet earthiness that keeps the powder from feeling austere.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are almost effervescent. Aldehydes give the opening a bright, soapy-clean shimmer, and the bergamot and Italian lemon add a sharp citrus accent that cuts through the sparkle. It reads crisp, almost bracing, the kind of opening that announces itself before the florals arrive. After about 30 minutes, the aldehydes recede and the heart takes over. Iris arrives first, cool and powdery, the texture of face powder in a compact, and rose folds in behind it, adding a soft, rounded warmth. Jasmine sits somewhere underneath, contributing a faint white-floral hum that keeps the heart from going dry. This is the most powdery phase, a stretch where the composition feels hushed and slightly nostalgic, as though the scent is remembering its own original launch.
Cultural impact
Imari 2015 is a reissue, not a debut, and that distinction shapes its place in the fragrance world. The original Imari launched in 1985 and built a following over three decades, so the 2015 version enters a market where the scent already has a name attached to it. The 30th-anniversary relaunch, packaged with Imari Seduction and a new Imari Elixir, was framed as a celebration of a composition that had already proven its staying power. Reissues of this kind are unusual, and they tend to be reserved for fragrances that have earned genuine loyalty rather than passing attention.
