The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Next Tobacco is a study in how the same material shifts depending on what surrounds it. Rather than restating a single tobacco idea, Assaf frames the warm, resinous core through aromatic lavender and an unexpected burst of pineapple, turning what could be a heavy composition into something brighter and more agile. The opening lifts the tobacco away from its usual smoky register and sets it against cool, almost edible brightness, then lets the lavender stitch the two halves together. What emerges is lighter than the note's reputation suggests, with the tobacco's warmth cushioned by fruit and sharpened by herbal coolness.
What makes Next Tobacco worth attention is the structural tension between the bright, almost playful opening and the grounded, woody base. Pineapple and bergamot at the top are rarely paired with tobacco at the heart in mainstream men's fragrance, and the composition leans into that contrast rather than smoothing it. The lavender gives the opening an aromatic sharpness that lifts the fruit away from simple sweetness, while the jasmine-orange blossom-patchouli trio in the heart adds a floral depth that prevents the tobacco from ever feeling one-dimensional.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost disorienting. Bergamot and pineapple arrive bright, almost summery, with lavender threading through to keep things from drifting into cologne territory. Then the tobacco arrives, not gradually but all at once, flanked by jasmine's white softness and patchouli's earthy weight. Orange blossom flickers underneath, adding a slightly bitter green edge that keeps the heart from going too sweet. As the composition moves past its opening phase, the fruit and florals begin to recede and the structure comes forward. Cedarwood takes over as the dominant voice, with amber warming the edges and musk pulling everything closer to skin. The transition from bright and fruity to woody and warm is the real performance of the fragrance, and watching the notes negotiate that handoff is what makes wearing it feel like an event rather than a routine.
Cultural impact
Assaf's 2025 release strips some of the usual weight from tobacco and replaces it with aromatic and fruity brightness, offering a different take on a material that often gets anchored in heavier traditions. The pineapple-lavender top is the conversation piece, the detail people ask about rather than the tobacco itself. It reads as warmer than a fresh citrus scent but less committed than a heavy oriental, landing in territory that feels neither too casual nor too formal.
