The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it all. A colt, young, unbroken, carrying everything it will become. Wild Colt is Assaf's answer to the question of what happens when raw energy gets formal structure. This 2022 release channels the equestrian imagery central to Assaf's creative identity. The fragrance opens with sharp, green notes that feel like a sudden burst of movement, something startled into action. As it develops, darker elements emerge: leather, smoke, and a mineral edge that ground the composition. The drydown settles into a warm, animalic presence that lingers on skin like heat rising from the earth. Wild Colt doesn't soften the concept. The fragrance IS the untamed thing, translated into scent.
The composition is the statement. Five top notes, saffron, grapefruit, bergamot, pink pepper, mint, arrive together in a calculated collision. The mint isn't there to soothe. It's there to sharpen everything else, to make the citrus and spice feel electric, not sweet. The heart is leather and vetiver. No softening agents. No florals to domesticate the composition. Labdanum threads through as a resinous bridge, pulling the wild opening toward something human-skin warm. The base adds ambergris and oakmoss, materials that don't evaporate quickly. They stay. This is a fragrance built for the drydown as much as the opening. The journey matters as much as the arrival.
The evolution
The opening doesn't tease. Saffron's metallic spice hits first, then grapefruit's brightness, then mint's cool counter. Pink pepper and bergamot layer on top. Within seconds, the composition is at full volume. The heart belongs to leather. Dense, smoky, carrying that faint animalic edge that makes itself known. Vetiver reinforces, mineral, earthy, with a tar-like quality that grounds everything. Labdanum's sticky warmth threads through as the transition material, the thing that makes the wild feel almost approachable. The drydown is where Wild Colt earns its reputation. Ambergris brings warm, salty sweetness. Musk makes it close, intimate, present only for someone standing near. Oakmoss adds a mossy, slightly bitter traditional note. Amberwood extends the warmth without sweetness, dry, woody, persistent. The scent stays close to skin for hours after that. Not projecting anymore. Just present. A warmth that doesn't fade so much as settle.
Cultural impact
Wild Colt occupies bold territory within its house and the broader market for strong oriental compositions. The combination of leather, vetiver, and ambergris places it in territory that rewards confidence and rewards careful attention. The sillage builds steadily over the first hour, announcing itself without apology. As time passes, the leather softens into something almost creamy while the vetiver and ambergris create a lingering warmth that remains close to the skin. This is a fragrance that speaks quietly but carries far, making it a lasting presence for those who wear it.
