The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Presente & Futuro by Enzo Galardi asks a quiet question: what happens when the present meets the future? Named in Italian, present and future, side by side, this 2017 composition is built on the idea that tradition and what comes next aren't opposites. They're collaborators. The name itself is the concept: present and future, happening simultaneously. Spices arrive sharp. Leather arrives later. In between, something creamy and floral blooms. The fragrance opens with a bold, assertive character that gradually softens as it develops on the skin. Clove and saffron bring their warm, spiced intensity to the foreground, while artemisia adds an herbal, slightly bitter freshness that grounds the opening.
What makes Presente & Futuro interesting is its structure: the opening is bold and assertive, with clove and saffron together creating a spiced, almost medicinal intensity that reads as old, like incense in a Renaissance workshop. Artemisia sharpens that impression with its herbal, almost bitter freshness. The four-note opening is loud, rooted in tradition. Then ylang-ylang enters. Creamy, tropical, almost sweet against all that spice. The transition isn't gradual, it arrives, asserting something softer in the middle of something sharp.
The evolution
The opening hits hard, clove's phenolic heat and saffron's honeyed spice arriving simultaneously, artemisia adding a green, almost astringent counterpoint while orange cuts through with brief brightness. This phase is loud, traditional, somewhat demanding. If you stopped someone on the street, this is what they'd smell. Twenty minutes in, the character shifts. Ylang-ylang emerges with its creamy, almost tropical sweetness, pushing against the spice like someone changing the subject mid-sentence. Patchouli follows, but it takes its time, earthy, grounding, slowing everything down. The initial sharpness doesn't disappear. It settles. By the second hour, leather becomes the story. Not loud leather, warm, suede-like, wrapped in amber's resinous glow and musk's animalic intimacy. The animalic here is subtle: skin-warm, close, present without projecting. It doesn't announce itself. It waits.
Cultural impact
Presente & Futuro, composed by Enzo Galardi in 2017, sits in the territory of warm spice and leather combinations that favor depth over brightness. The composition unfolds in distinct phases: an assertive, spiced opening that gradually softens, a creamy floral heart that brings unexpected sweetness, and a warm, intimate base of leather, amber, and musk. The fragrance develops throughout the day, revealing new dimensions as the initial sharpness settles into something more subdued and wearable.
