Why it exists.
The beginning
Released in 2022 as part of Annayake's Godai collection, Kogaï For Him translates a natural element into wearable form, with each fragrance in the line meant to embody one of four elemental forces. The result is something built for movement: a composition that opens quickly, breathes easily, and leaves room around itself rather than crowding the wearer. That sense of space runs through the whole scent, from the way the top notes lift off the skin to how the base settles into something soft and unobtrusive. It's a fragrance that rewards attention without demanding it, offering a different kind of presence than the dense, heavy compositions that often dominate the spicy-woods corner of men's perfumery.
The choice of cardamom and black pepper up top, rather than the usual citrus charge, gives the opening its bite without resorting to sharpness. Cypriol oil, also known as nagarmotha, anchors the heart with an earthy, rooty depth that grounds the composition in something substantial and mineral-feeling, while crisp apple lifts the middle with a flash of green that keeps the whole thing from tipping fully into spiced-woods territory.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all crackle: cardamom warming up, black pepper pushing through, elemi resin lending a bright almost-citrus flicker that keeps the opening from feeling heavy. Then something shifts around the thirty-minute mark. The pepper pulls back, the elemi softens, and the cypriol arrives with this cool earthiness that almost smells like wet stone after rain, a deep, rooty undertow that changes the whole register of the scent. Geranium and apple hold the middle space, crisp and slightly green, before the base gathers itself in the background. Cashmere wood and sandalwood do most of the quiet work in the drydown, with cedar threading through and moss adding a faint green shadow underneath, barely there but enough to keep the woods from feeling too polished or synthetic. As the hours pass, the spice fades first, leaving the warmer, creamier wood notes to take over.
Cultural impact
Kogaï For Him draws on the element of air as its conceptual anchor, an unusual starting point for a pepper-and-woods composition that nonetheless gives the scent a clear sense of direction. Within the Godai line, it stands as the air counterpart to the other three elemental releases, completing a quartet built around natural forces translated into wearable form. Its reception speaks to a growing appetite for spicy-woody fragrances that feel considered rather than aggressive, compositions that build around tension between spice, earth, and green freshness rather than relying on a single dominant note.
