The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
An'na arrived as Annayake's feminine edition targeting younger women who were confident, intelligent, and discrete, women the brand wanted to help accentuate with soft pink hints and tame fruity-floral drops. The scent opens with delicate citrus notes that feel crisp and inviting, setting the stage for the fruity-floral heart that follows. Soft green accents add a natural quality, while subtle pink pepper provides a gentle spark that lifts the opening without overwhelming it. The composition is still rooted in the brand's signature chypre structure, enriched with enough fruit and floral to feel like a departure from the house's typical offerings. Annayake didn't abandon its roots. It added a room to the house.
The structure is where An'na earns its complexity. Blackcurrant and mandarin open bright, almost dewy, cool and tart in a way that feels like morning. But this isn't a fragrance that stays in that register. The heart is where the work happens: tuberose and jasmine bringing lush, almost humid warmth, rose threading through to add softness without disappearing, and coriander adding a faint spice that prevents the whole thing from going saccharine. The base is what separates An'na from a standard fruity-floral. Patchouli gives it an earthy, slightly dry counterweight. Amber adds warmth without sweetness. Together they create the chypre tension that makes the composition feel deliberate rather than default.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: blackcurrant and mandarin, tart and bright, the kind of freshness that reads as confidence. The mandarin fades first, within the first hour, its citrus quality dissolving into the warmer notes beneath. What remains is the blackcurrant, its slightly wine-like depth hanging around like a memory of the opening act. Around the two-hour mark, the florals take over. Tuberose announces itself with some authority, lush, creamy, with just enough of that indolic edge to feel grown-up rather than juvenile. Jasmine and rose pile in underneath, and for a stretch this fragrance smells like a flower shop on a warm day. The coriander is subtle but present, adding a faint spice that stops the florals from going flat. Then, slowly, the base arrives. Patchouli and amber don't rush. They wait until the florals begin to thin, then settle in like a warm hand on the shoulder. The drydown is quiet but committed, this is where the chypre character finally shows itself fully, and where An'na proves it wasn't just another fruity-floral.
Cultural impact
An'na occupies an interesting position in Annayake's catalog: a distinctive entry point for a house known for its chypre foundation. The combination of fruity-floral brightness with chypre structure gives it a character that stands apart from both the label's more minimal releases and the broader fruity-floral category. Wearers tend to describe it as the kind of fragrance someone chooses when they want something confident without being aggressive, present but not demanding. The composition balances approachability with sophistication, making it a versatile choice for those who appreciate nuanced perfumery.
