The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Odyssee III is the third chapter in Anfar 1950's ongoing exploration of masculine fragrance. The name itself signals intention, a series, a progression, a deliberate arc. Ahmedullah Anfar composed this 2023 release as a modern take on the aromatic fougère, drawing from Arabian perfumery traditions where boldness and sophistication aren't opposites. The brief was clear: take the structure of something familiar, then make it unexpectedly warm.
What makes Odyssee III stand apart from the classic fougère template is what happens in the base. Most masculine aromatics lean heavily on lavender and vetiver without ever fully committing to warmth. Here, tonka bean and vanilla arrive like an aside, soft, sweet, slightly powdery, and they don't leave. Amberwood holds everything together, giving the drydown a woodiness that keeps the sweetness from becoming childish. It's the difference between a fragrance that smells expensive and one that smells like someone who knows how to wear it.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, cardamom and pink pepper with a cool Mint undertone that reads almost medicinal before Bergamot sweetens the deal. Artemisia adds a slightly bitter, herbaceous edge that keeps the top from feeling like a cologne. Around the thirty-minute mark, the heart takes over. Lavender becomes the loudest voice, but Geranium and Vetiver are doing the work underneath, green, earthy, adding texture. The drydown is where things get interesting. Vanilla emerges first, then Tonka Bean brings its signature powdery sweetness. Amberwood anchors everything into a warm, slightly resinous base that lingers for 6-8 hours on most skin types. Close to the skin. Not projecting wildly, but present, persistent, and quietly memorable.
Cultural impact
Odyssee III arrived in 2023 as part of a crowded field of masculine designer and niche releases. Reviewers on fragrance communities have noted its proximity to established benchmarks, comparison points like Chanel Bleu de Chanel and Tom Ford Oud Wood appear repeatedly, though Odyssee III is its own composition. The 2023 launch timing placed it amid a resurgence of interest in aromatic fougères, which had been considered somewhat dated before the recent wave of modern reinterpretations brought them back into consideration. The fragrance occupies a specific niche: aromatic enough to feel familiar, warm enough to feel contemporary.
