The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ahmedullah Anfar designed Artisan Oud to do something specific: bridge heritage and modern sophistication. The name is the mission statement. 'Artisan' speaks to construction, deliberate, careful layering. 'Oud' speaks to lineage, to the material that Arabian perfumery built its reputation on. The 2023 launch arrived at a moment when the oud category had grown crowded with options ranging from the brutal to the safe. Anfar wanted something in between. A fragrance that carries cultural weight but doesn't require translation. Something you could wear to a business dinner and a late-night conversation without switching bottles. The official description frames it as a translation of refinement into modern form, the kind of claim every fragrance makes, but few deliver on.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between its materials. Benzoin is sticky, balsamic, almost animalic in the right context. Birch is dry, slightly medicinal, the kind of note that reads as leather when properly handled. These aren't soft materials. Neither is saffron, which carries a warm, medicinal spice that skews heavy. The base is where things get unexpected: raspberry and amberwood together. Raspberry in oriental fragrance typically shows up as a sweetness, the bright, accessible kind. Here, paired with amberwood's resinous warmth, it becomes something different. Tart. Almost wine-like.
The evolution
The opening is immediate and declarative. Oud and incense arrive together, smoke and richness occupying the same space without blending into indistinguishable haze. This is a fragrance with something to say. For the first hour, that presence holds. Benzoin, saffron, and birch arrive around the 1-2 hour mark, not replacing the opening but layering over it, adding warmth and a dry, spiced quality that shifts the character from smoky to warm. By hour three, the top notes have receded and the base takes over. Amberwood smooths everything into a warm amber. Geranium keeps the green alive, subtle but present. And then there's the raspberry. Late arrival. Long stay. The tartness shows up just when you've forgotten it exists and stays for hours. On most skin types, expect 8-10 hours of presence. The sillage, rated strong by the community, means projection for the first few hours before settling into something more personal. On fabric, the scent lingers overnight. Incense and berry emerge from clothing a day later, faint but recognizable.
Cultural impact
A newer release that has gained traction among oud enthusiasts for its longevity and strong projection. The berry-Oud combination stands out in a category where oud often defaults to smoky darkness or safe sweetness. Community reception is positive on value and performance, with particular praise for how the oud avoids harshness, a common complaint in heavier oriental compositions.
