The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ahmedullah Anfar's vision for Artisan Noir was a departure. Not the sanitized tuberose of daytime florals, this one arrives dessert-warm, evening-styled, wrapped in praline and coffee with notes that unfold across hours of wear. The opening is tart-fruity: litchi, rhubarb cutting through the sweetness while the heart goes creamy-floral: tuberose, peony, jasmine sambac before the drydown brings vanilla, praline, and cashmeran's warm musk.
What makes this composition work is the tension it holds. Tuberose is rarely given this much room to be itself, creamy, indolic, almost aggressive in its floral presence. The rhubarb isn't decoration; it's the counterweight that keeps the sweetness from reading flat. Coffee grounds anchor the opening without dominating. Praline and vanilla eventually take over the florals entirely, creating something that smells more like a chocolate-hazelnut praline than a floral fragrance in the final act.
The evolution
The opening hits tart-fruity. Litchi, rhubarb cutting through the sweetness. Coffee grounds and almond linger like an amaretto espresso in the background. Twenty minutes in, the florals begin their slow takeover. Tuberose arrives bold, unapologetic, the real thing, not the sanitized commercial version. Turkish rose follows, jasmine sambac bringing its honeyed quality. Peony softens the approach but doesn't dilute it. The drydown is where Artisan Noir becomes itself, unexpected darkness creeping in beneath the vanilla and praline, cacao and incense shifting the composition into something more complex than its sweet opening promised. Cashmeran's warm musk extends the experience without fanfare.
Cultural impact
Artisan Noir joins the 2023 landscape of niche fragrances that take gourmand compositions seriously. Anfar 1950 has built credibility in the dessert-inspired category, and this scent positions itself as a bold gourmand-floral, a statement piece that doesn't play it safe. The sweet-floral-gourmand profile appeals to wearers who want something with genuine presence rather than easy accessibility.
