The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Silk Route was more than a trade path. It was a corridor of ideas, materials, and sensory discovery, spices moving east to west, resins moving west to east. Irina Burlakova built Silk Route around that tension: the bright, sharp aromatics of the opening that announce departure, and the warm, resinous base that arrives like a destination. Released in 2016 alongside Oud du Jour, it was part of Amouroud's first public collection. The composition opens with an assertive spice-driven burst that feels like setting out on an adventure, while the drydown settles into something that feels like arrival, like coming home to warmth and resinous richness. There's a deliberate push and pull at work here, the initial intensity gradually yielding to something more intimate and enveloping.
The opening aromatics are bright and sharp, with star anise and ginger providing liquorice-bright, clean heat that dominates the initial phase. The honeyed immortelle and narcotic tuberose eventually arrive, creating a more complex aromatic landscape. The delay between initial and subsequent scent phases creates a nuanced progression, with frankincense subtly threading through the vanilla and leather, preventing the composition from becoming overly sweet.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, star anise and ginger arriving sharp, almost confrontational. Cloves linger in the back, a quiet warmth beneath the brightness. The immortelle brings a honeyed amber quality that thickens the air, its presence adding weight and richness to the composition. Tuberose and narcissus arrive together, creamy, a little narcotic, like stepping into a sun-warmed garden at dusk. French lavender threads through, keeping everything from going too heavy. The drydown is where it earns its name. Vanilla and tonka bean combine with frankincense curling upward, leather and oakmoss grounding everything into something warm, resinous, and close. It doesn't fill a room. It draws people in.
Cultural impact
Silk Route arrived as part of Amouroud's debut collection, offering an oriental richness that appealed to those seeking warmth and resinous depth. The fragrance speaks to collector-intellectuals who treat fragrance as sensory research, with wearers describing it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. Its warm, resinous character has found appreciation among those drawn to oriental richness and complex layering.
