The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ruthless arrived in 2018 from Alexandria Fragrances, a house founded by perfumer Hany Hafez. The name sets the brief before you even spray it, and the formula follows suit without apology. Up top, citrus and sea notes hit with immediate clarity, sharp and saline, the kind of opening that snaps you awake rather than easing you in. The heart introduces an herbal-spicy quality that pulls the composition away from the typical aquatic flatness, adding texture and bite where you'd expect nothing but cool breeze. Then there's the base, a grounded woody structure that doesn't dissolve into thin air hours after application. It reads as direct, energetic, unapologetic. There's no attempt to be everything to everyone, no softening of edges.
What makes Ruthless worth attention is the balance between its aquatic opening and the denser base. There's a real tension here between the cool, saline top notes and the warm, woody foundation waiting underneath, and that tension is what gives the composition its shape. The oakmoss and guaiac wood don't hide in the base for the entire wear. They surface earlier than you'd expect, lending an earthy counterweight to the marine brightness before the citrus has fully retreated.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the citrus and marine notes, grapefruit and mandarin hitting bright and saline before the sea current softens and recedes into the background. By the 30-minute mark, the jasmine and bay leaf push through with quiet authority. The jasmine is restrained, a suggestion more than a statement, hovering just above the composition rather than announcing itself. Bay leaf adds green, slightly peppery lift that keeps the heart from going soft or floral-heavy. Two hours in, the base takes over completely. Ambergris lends a warm, musky skin tone, the kind of drydown that feels lived-in rather than applied. Oakmoss grounds everything with that earthy, forest-floor dampness, while guaiac wood brings a smoky depth, woody and resinous without ever tipping into harshness. Patchouli anchors it all below, the quiet bass note holding the structure together.
Cultural impact
Ruthless brings something grounded to a conversation that often defaults to fleeting freshness. Its herbal heart and warm base give it dimension, the kind of weight that makes it feel like a complete fragrance rather than just a top-note showcase. The composition works across seasons and settings without ever feeling generic or interchangeable. You can wear it to the office without it disappearing, wear it out at night without it feeling out of place. The balance between aquatic brightness and woody depth creates versatility without sacrificing character.
