    Hany Hafez

Hany Hafez grew up in the bustling alleys of Cairo, where his family ran a modest oil‑mixing workshop. As a child he watched his parents grind ambergris, distill rose petals and blend spices into fragrant oils, learning the rhythm of scent before he could read. After completing a chemistry degree at Cairo University, he apprenticed with regional perfumers, translating laboratory precision into aromatic storytelling. In 2015 he founded Alexandria Fragrances, a boutique house that champions Egyptian heritage while speaking to a global palate. The launch of Zion in 2018 marked his first high‑profile release and announced a new voice from the Nile. Since then Hany has built a catalog that includes Visionary, Seven Seas, Zeyt’s Black Label 01 and the collaborative Haba Lava, each echoing his childhood workshop and his modern laboratory. He now mentors emerging noses in Egypt, hoping to keep the craft alive beyond his own bottle.

    The signature

    How Hany composes

Hany favors a bright, citrus‑forward opening that quickly gives way to herbal or aromatic heart notes. He often layers bergamot, grapefruit and lime with thyme, artemisia or galbanum, then anchors the blend with warm woods, amber or resin. His technique leans on precise dilution, allowing each ingredient to breathe without overwhelming the next. He prefers natural extracts—Egyptian jasmine, Egyptian musk, frankincense—paired with modern synthetics that add depth. The result is a clean, energetic profile that feels both familiar and daring.

    Philosophy

    What drives Hany

Hany treats each composition as a conversation between memory and material. He believes a fragrance should capture a moment—a sunrise over the Mediterranean, the spice market’s heat, the quiet of a desert night—and then invite the wearer to relive it. His work respects tradition but never bows to nostalgia; he mixes classic absolutes with unexpected green notes to keep the scent alive on the skin. Sustainability guides his ingredient choices, and he favors locally sourced botanicals that tell a story of place. Above all, he seeks to create scents that feel personal, not prescribed.
