The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Qafiya Sport asked a different question: what happens when that house turns its attention to the active wearer? The name holds both ends of the brief. Qafiya, the traditional headwear, suggests ceremony and heritage, while Sport means ready to move. Ajmal didn't dilute its identity. They reframed it. The fragrance carries the house's signature depth while opening up to a more dynamic lifestyle. It's meant for the wearer who wants something with character that doesn't weigh them down, something that moves with them through their day. The blend feels sophisticated yet approachable, combining warm undertones with crisp, energizing accents that adapt to movement and changing environments.
The real tension in Qafiya Sport lives in the transition. The opening, bergamot, violet, nutmeg, reads crisp and citrusy, almost sport-fragrance territory. Then the coffee arrives. Not a hint. The actual roasted bean, grounding the composition with something darker and more deliberate. Birch tar adds a smoky edge that most fresh fragrances wouldn't dare. Cedarwood and Damask rose hold the middle without softening it. The base, leather, amber, sandalwood, gives it longevity without the syrupy sweetness that often comes with sport interpretations. What makes this composition interesting is that it refuses to choose. The Sport badge earns its place in the name through energy, not weakness.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and immediate, bergamot's citrus sharpness softened by violet's powdery warmth. Nutmeg threads in quietly, giving it a spiced edge that prevents it from reading generic. The transition occurs when the coffee surfaces and the whole thing shifts register. Suddenly it smells less like morning and more like late afternoon. Cedar and birch tar layer in, adding a dry, smoky wood character that replaces the initial freshness. Damask rose floats underneath, not dominant but present, a floral warmth that keeps the leather and smoke from becoming harsh. By the drydown, the amber and sandalwood have settled into a powdery-warm base that lingers close to the skin. The coffee note doesn't disappear. It stays, threading through the leather and sandalwood like a memory of the opening, adding continuity and depth to the final hours of wear.
Cultural impact
Qafiya Sport stands as a 2018 release that steps outside the house's traditional oud-focused territory. The sport designation reflects a shift in tone, introducing a fragrance that feels at home during movement and activity while maintaining the house's characteristic approach to composition. It's a scent that speaks to a different context, one where dynamism matters without sacrificing the thoughtful layering that defines the brand.
